Professor Wishart speaks with BBC Look East on NHS waiting times caused by the pandemic

Professor Gordon Wishart, Check4Cancer’s Chief Medical Officer and Visiting Professor of Cancer Surgery at Anglia Ruskin University speaks with BBC Look East on the NHS’s waiting times caused by the pandemic. There are currently 5 million patients waiting for routine operations with the NHS and, BBC Look East discusses with Professor Wishart how the collaboration between the NHS and the private sector is essential in reducing the backlog of procedures.

2020 saw 40,000 missed cancer cases due to the pandemic of which many people have simply disappeared from the system or presented late with symptoms which is a cause of real concern. 2020 also saw the suspension of NHS screening services for bowel, breast and cervical cancer and a huge drop in urgent cancer referrals as people were afraid to seek help due to the pandemic. Professor Wishart has called upon the government to tackle the cancer backlog by looking at screening pathways streamlined according to your risk rather than age. Professor Wishart has also called for screening for prostate and lung cancers to be assessed and to also accelerate at-home HPV screening for cervical cancer.
