Private providers expect surge in mammogram requests

Private providers of screening mammograms such as BreastHealth UK ( are expecting a surge in requests from women who do not want to wait up to 6 months for their mammogram.

'Up to 270 women in England may have died because they did not receive invitations to a final routine breast cancer screening', the Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt says.

For every 1000 women screened, approximately 70 women will be recalled for further assessment and 7 will be diagnosed with breast cancer. More than 2000 breast cancers could therefore be diagnosed by screening the 309,000 women during the next six months, putting increased pressure on NHS waiting times for surgery and other breast cancer treatments.
