Know Your Prostate. Know Your Risk
Prostate cancer is now the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the UK.
- Over 52,000 men are diagnosed every year
- More than 12,000 deaths annually
- 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed in their lifetime
Signs & symptoms of prostate cancer
In early stages, prostate cancer may cause no symptoms at all. When symptoms do occur, they may include:
- Difficulty starting or stopping urination
- Weak urine flow
- Needing to urinate more frequently, especially at night
- Blood in urine or semen
- Persistent pain in the lower back, hips or pelvis
These symptoms do not always mean cancer, but they should never be ignored.
Early detection changes everything
When caught early, survival rates are extremely high. When diagnosed late, treatment options are more limited.
Prostate cancer doesn’t always give warning signs. That’s why understanding risk - not just symptoms - is critical.
Who is at higher risk of prostate cancer?
- Men aged 50+
- Black men (approximately double the risk)
- Men with a father or brother diagnosed with prostate cancer
- Men who are overweight or living with certain metabolic conditions
Risk increases with age - but risk awareness should start earlier.
Prostate screening and diagnostics
What you should know
Prostate assessment usually begins with a simple PSAblood test. If results require furtherinvestigation, this may then include:

- MRI scan
- Digital rectal examination (DRE)
- Biopsy, if clinically indicated

for men aged 40+.
No GP referral is required.
It’s a small finger-prick blood test that is done at home.
Results are fast- usually within 5 working days.
It’s a simple, private first step, and expert guidance is provided if further investigation is needed.
