Check4Cancer is proud to congratulate Professor Andrew Beggs, Clinical Advisor to Check4Cancer, on receiving the prestigious Josiah Mason Award for Academic Achievement at the University of Birmingham’s Founders’ Awards.

This award recognises Professor Beggs’ groundbreaking contributions to cancer genetics and his commitment to improving outcomes for patients worldwide through translational research.

Pioneering Advances in Cancer Genetics

Professor Beggs leads a world-class research team at the University of Birmingham and University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. His work focuses on understanding why cancers become resistant to treatment and how to develop more effective, personalised therapies. By harnessing advanced technologies, Professor Beggs is helping to bridge the gap between research and real-world cancer care.

Transforming Treatment Through Organoid Models

One of Professor Beggs’ most significant achievements is his use of organoid models; tiny, 3D replicas of individual cancers grown in the lab from patient samples. These models allow researchers to test how a tumour might respond to different treatments before they’re used in the clinic, offering safer and more personalised care.

“These models behave exactly as the cancer would in the patient’s body, providing invaluable insights without risk to the patient,” Professor Beggs explains.

Revolutionising Early Detection with Genomics

Professor Beggs’ team has also pioneered the use of nanopore sequencing for early, non-invasive cancer detection. In paediatric cases, a single drop of blood can now provide critical information about cancer type, recurrence, and treatment resistance, without the need for invasive biopsies.

Driving Real-World Impact

As a consultant cancer surgeon, Professor Beggs ensures that his research directly informs and improves clinical practice. He also leads regional and national initiatives in cancer genetics, advising the Department of Health and Social Care and Genomics England.

A Well-Deserved Honour

Named after one of Birmingham’s most influential historical figures, the Josiah Mason Award celebrates individuals whose research has made a significant impact locally and globally.

“It means so much to both me and the lab to have our work recognised in this way,” said Professor Beggs. “Our discoveries are helping patients every day, and this award reflects the commitment of our team to making a difference.”

A Valued Partnership

Check4Cancer is delighted to work with Professor Beggs in his role as Clinical Advisor and applauds his continued drive to push the boundaries of cancer research and care. His success is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when innovation meets dedication.

Congratulations, Professor Beggs, on this outstanding achievement.
