qFIT stands for ‘quantitative faecal immunochemical test’. It is the only bowel, or colorectal, screening test recommended by NICE in the UK. It uses antibodies to detect even small amounts of haemoglobin in stools and is used as a primary screening test for people without symptoms.

Your qFIT results are usually available within five working days of the laboratory receiving your sample. We’ll notify you as soon as your results are ready.

Most people receive their results in about a week, depending on postal delivery times and lab processing.

For people without symptoms and at average risk, screening every one to two years is generally recommended. Those with a family history or higher personal risk may need more frequent checks - speak to your GP if you are unsure.

Routine NHS screening typically runs until age 74, but you can continue private bowel screening beyond this age if you wish to monitor your health proactively.
