Why breast screening?

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK, with 1 in 7 women diagnosed in their lifetime. Identifying changes early significantly improves treatment success, with survival rates as high as 98% when detected at the earliest stage.

While NHS breast screening is available every three years from age 50 to 70, private breast cancer screening with Check4Cancer provides:

Earlier access :

available from age 40.

Greater flexibility :

choose when and where to have your mammogram.

Expert-led care :

referral to Check4Cancer breast clinic network if required.

Regular screening helps detect cancers before they can be felt as lumps or cause symptoms, giving you peace of mind and the best chance of early detection.

Why choose Check4Cancer for your breast cancer screening?

When it comes to breast cancer screening, not all providers offer the same level of service or tests that are appropriate for breast screening. This is what sets us apart from other providers, ensuring you receive the highest standard of support and clinical care.

FAQs

When should I start breast cancer screening?

While NHS screening starts at 50, private screening is available from age 40. Women with a family history or other risk factors may benefit from earlier screening.

How often should I have a mammogram?

If you're aged 40 – 49, annual mammograms are recommended to check for early signs of breast cancer.
From age 50 onwards, the NHS offers screening every three years. However, private screening can offer more frequent reassurance, typically every year between 40–49, and then every two years from age 50+.

Is a mammogram painful?

Some women experience slight discomfort due to breast compression, but the procedure is quick and essential for accurate results.

What happens if my results are abnormal?

Our team will guide you through the next steps, or a referral to a specialist. Most findings do not mean cancer but may require further assessment.

Can I have a mammogram if I have breast implants?

Yes, special techniques are used to ensure accurate imaging for women with implants. Please advise us when booking an appointment so the clinic can be made aware.

What is the difference between a mammogram, MRI, and ultrasound?

Mammograms are recommended for routine screening, using X-rays to detect early signs of breast cancer.

Ultrasound is the main imaging used in breast clinics and will be used to investigate any breast lump or area of lumpiness.

Is private breast screening better than NHS screening?

Both NHS and private screenings aim to detect breast cancer early. Private screening offers greater flexibility, earlier access, and more frequent options, helping you take a proactive approach to your health.

"I think your screening mammogram service might have saved my life. As a result of the mammogram, I was found to have a DCIS* and had a lumpectomy and then radiotherapy. I will be followed up every six months at the London clinic. It's a brilliant thing you do and I am very grateful. (*DCIS means 'Ductal Carcinoma in situ and is considered the earliest form of breast cancer)"
