What is skin cancer screening?

A skin cancer screening appointment is a full-body assessment designed to detect early signs of skin cancer and monitor changes in existing moles. During the appointment, a specialist skin cancer nurse examines your skin from head to toe, looking for lesions, moles, or marks that may need closer attention.

Skin cancer screening uses high-resolution dermoscopic digital imaging to capture detailed photographs of your moles across your entire body. These images are stored securely and can be compared over time to identify any changes that may indicate early melanoma or non-melanoma skin cancer.
Screening looks for the main types of skin cancer, including:

  • Melanoma
  • Basal cell carcinoma (BCC)
  • Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC)

This process provides a clear baseline for future comparison and helps detect concerns early, when treatment is most effective. If you’d like to learn more about different skin cancers or symptoms to look for, you can visit our Skin Cancer Advice & Awareness pages.

Why skin screening matters?

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the UK, and early detection can make a significant difference to treatment options, outcomes, and peace of mind. Many skin changes are harmless, but some can be early signs of melanoma or other skin cancers that are easier to treat when identified promptly.

Regular skin screening helps spot concerning changes early, reduces uncertainty, and allows you to take action before problems progress

FAQs

What can I expect at my skin cancer screening and mole clinic appointment?

Your consultation with a skin cancer specialist nurse will include:

  • A full-body skin assessment to identify any concerning areas.
  • Tips and guidance on self-examination, skin care, and sun protection.
  • A thorough examination using dermoscopy, where the deeper layers of the skin are assessed.
  • High-quality digital and dermoscopic images of any suspicious skin changes or moles, if necessary.
  • We provide education and awareness, including take-home information to aid safe skin health

Our service is all-inclusive, meaning there is no extra charge for images taken during your appointment, whether it’s one mole or multiple areas under review.

What happens after my skin cancer screening and mole clinic appointment?

After your appointment:

  • A results letter will be sent to you within five working days. This letter also includes any images taken during the consultation for your records.
  • If abnormalities are found, we’ll guide you through the next steps, such as information for your GP or a private consultant for further evaluation.
What will my results letter say if images were taken during the appointment?

Your results letter may include one of two outcomes:

  1. 1. No suspicious features: If your moles or skin changes show no concerning signs, you’ll receive reassurance that no further action is needed. Based on your risk assessment, we’ll also advise when your next Skin Cancer Screening and Mole Clinic appointment should be scheduled.
  2. 2. Suspicious features identified: If concerning features are identified, you’ll be advised to seek a face-to-face consultation for further examination, which may include a biopsy and/or treatment.
What is dermoscopy?

Dermoscopy is a pain-free, non-invasive method to examine your skin in detail. Using a dermatoscope (a hand-held magnifying device), your nurse can magnify the area by up to 10 times, allowing for a closer look at any skin irregularities. A lubricant may be applied to your skin during this process, which will not cause any discomfort or irritation.

Where can I get a mole checked?

You can access our Skin Cancer Screening and Mole Clinics nationwide. Whether you’re in London, Manchester, Glasgow, or other cities like Leeds, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Belfast, Newcastle, Cardiff, or Nottingham, we make it easy to find a Check4Cancer private skin cancer check near you.

What is your cancellation policy?

We understand that plans can change, and we aim to be as accommodating as possible. Please review our full cancellation policy for more details.

How accurate is skin cancer testing?

Skin cancer and mole screening checks are highly effective for identifying suspicious changes early. Digital imaging allows for detailed monitoring of changes over time, and any concerning lesions are reviewed by a specialist consultant.

What is the difference between a mole check and skin cancer screening?

A mole check focuses on examining individual moles of concern, while a full skin cancer screening includes a complete head-to-toe assessment to detect early signs of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers.

Do I need a GP referral?

No, you do not need a GP referral. You can book directly at one of our nationwide clinics.

Can I get a copy of my images and report?

Yes. You can request copies of your digital images and your results report for your own records or to share with your GP or specialist.
